Celebrating Heritage and Heart: South Middle School’s Black History Celebration
South Middle School (SMS) hosted a vibrant Black History Celebration, bringing together scholars, families, and community members for an evening of food, fellowship, and powerful performances. The event served as a joyous reminder that celebrating Black history is an essential part of our shared American story.
An Evening of Performance and Art
The celebration kicked off in the auditorium with a warm welcome from hosts Ms. Jaylise Vandervort and Mr. Ricky Johnson, followed by opening remarks from Principal Roderick Phoenix and Assistant Principal Beckner Joseph.
The auditorium was filled with music and movement, featuring:
-
Choral Excellence: The SMS Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Santacroce, led the audience in the powerful Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice & Sing," along with a rendition of "Lovely Day."
Theatrical Highlights: The SMS Drama Club, led by Theater Director Mrs. Small, performed excerpts from their production of "The Lion King".
Student Voices: A variety of songs and poems were performed by talented scholars, including Jacob Rodriguez, Jordyn Hines, Mya Whitted, and many others, highlighting the creative spirit of the SMS student body.
MBK Fellows: Leading the Way: Special recognition was given to the 2026 My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Fellows, including NECSD scholars Cameron Ford and Taymere Mann. Their presence underscored the mission of My Brother's Keeper—fostering leadership, voice, and a strong commitment to community service.
Talented Alumni Return: The special event welcomed guest Spoken Word Artist, Mariah Henry (AKA R.I.A.H) who performed an original piece for the audience.
Leadership, Learning, and Celebration
Following the auditorium program, attendees participated in the SMS Black History Gallery Walk. Led by students from the National Junior Honors Society (NJHS), the walk provided a visual journey through history, allowing guests to reflect on the legacies of those who have shaped our world.
The Newburgh Performing Arts Academy African Troupe, led by Arthur Lorde, and the Senior Hip Hop Team, led by Ralph M'Vore, showcased the evolution of rhythm and dance.
A Community Effort
This celebration was made possible by the dedicated BHM Planning Committee and the support of the SMS faculty, staff, and custodial teams. We extend a special thanks to the SMS PTG and our community partners for their generous contributions and donations that made the night truly special.
