Ms. McCurdy and Ms. Sileno's English Classes Tour SUNY New Paltz Art Gallery
Ms. McCurdy and Ms. Sileno's English 11 Regents classes traveled to SUNY New Paltz to take in some art and tour the campus. SUNY New Paltz offered an opportunity to visit their Samuel Dorsky Art Museum on the campus and to work with their Education Director, Zachary Bowman. The goal was to expose high school students to art and try to relate it to material that they were learning in their classrooms. The classes are almost done reading The Color of Water by James McBride and Mr. Bowman worked with the students to encourage them to explore the novel's themes - self-identify, healing, etc. - by making thematic connections with the artwork at the museum. The exhibit was by South African artists called Abstract Minded. Students dined in the student union and toured the campus. Mr. Bowman is visiting the classrooms next week to host a follow up lesson.
