OCIAA Honors Two NFA Varsity Scholar Athletes
The Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) honored Scholar Athletes on May 22, 2018 at Kuhl’s Highland House in Middletown.
Gabrielle Leggett and Greg Fischer were honored, both from Newburgh Free Academy, Main campus.
Gabrielle Leggett has an overall GPA of 99.09 and played soccer, softball, and basketball during her high school career. Gabrielle plans to attend James Madison University to student sports management.
Greg Fischer has an overall GPA of 99.138 and wrestled and ran cross country during his high school career. Greg plans to attend Wesleyan University to study engineering.
Coach Leggett served role of father and coach to Gabrielle and coach of the Wrestling team for Greg. Dr. Roberto Padilla, Superintendent of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Mr. Ron Montalto, Director of Athletics, co-principals Mr. Raul Rodriguez and Mr. Matteo Doddo, Ms. Stephanie Faucher, secretary for athletics, and various family members were on hand to celebrate the accomplishments of our scholar athletes.
Presenters or speakers included: Mr. Christopher Mayo, Interscholastic Athletic Coordinator or the Regional Office of Interscholastic Athletics, Mr. William Hecht, Superintendent of Orange-Ulster BOCES, and Mr. Michael Kroemer, Athletic Director for Cornwall High School. The Times Herald Record presented a student with the Varsity845 Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Special guests included: Mr. Steven Neuhaus, County Executive, Orange County and Mr. David Hoovler, Orange County District Attorney. The keynote address was given by Mrs. Nicole Feller Lee, a recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award in 1989 and current holds the role of Assistant Vice President of Focus Media in Goshen.
