Letter from Dr. Padilla: Welcome to the New 2018-2019 School Year

Dear Scholars, Families, Faculty, and Staff,

Are you as excited as I am for the start of school next week? It is my hope that you have had a phenomenal summer. One filled with rest, exploration, and reflection. Our school and central office teams have poured countless hours into preparing a special year for you and your family. As we look on back this past year, we certainly did it with LOVE. There is so much to celebrate, but there is still much more work to do.

We graduated more students than we have in previous years. Of which, seventeen seniors earned a high school diploma and an associate’s degree in just four years. We have a National Teacher of the Year, a Fulbright Scholar, and we have been recognized as the 3rd best breakfast program in the country. These are just a few of Newburgh’s accomplishments that were recognized locally and nationally.

Next week, thousands of students will arrive for the first day of school and they may notice a few changes. We are launching a new Early College High School program, where selected scholars will earn up to 26 college credits by the end of their senior year. That equates to one year of college tuition at no cost to them . . . or you. A new math curriculum will be implemented across all elementary schools. This year, we have invested more resources in our digital convergence, allowing all 3rd through 10th grade scholars to receive their own laptop. Each teacher in the district has also received a laptop. This is on top of the interactive boards installed last year in 95% of our classrooms.

After, a year of planning and training, Newburgh is now a Google district. Staff and students will have full access to GSuite for Education tools. New digital content and additional resources will support teachers in their efforts to make learning more interactive, dynamic, and personalized.

More notably, we have kept our focus on securing safe school environments. Over the summer, we hired a Director of Safety & Security and additional security monitors. We have installed 30 more cameras. There will be 1,000 more cameras installed once New York State approves the Smartbond allocation.  The new position as well as additional security measures emphasizes the importance we place on keeping students and staff safe. 

Our online portal to report any DASA (Dignity for All Students) related concerns launched last spring. We are proud to be able to offer our scholars and their families a way to report their concerns anonymously, alleviating the fears associated with reporting acts of bullying. We encourage you and your child(ren) to use this tool as needed, so we can work to address DASA concerns.

Lastly, each school has their own traditions and unique characteristics that make them special. However, collectively we represent one district. This year’s mantra is “We are One.” Our efforts and results reflect a more united community and school system. The data tells a new story about our district. Let’s continue to partner together to ensure our scholars have access to the best education possible. Together, we can inspire our scholars to become leaders beyond Academy Field.

Estimados alumnos, familias, profesores y personal:

¿Están tan emocionados como yo por el comienzo de la escuela la próxima semana? Espero que hayas tenido un verano fenomenal. Uno llena de descanso, exploración y reflexión. Nuestros equipos de las escuelas y la oficina central han dedicado innumerables horas preparando un año especial para ustedes y sus familias. Cuando miramos hacia atrás el año pasado, ciertamente lo hicimos con AMOR. Hay mucho que celebrar, pero aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer.

Graduamos a más estudiantes que en años anteriores. De los cuales, diecisiete estudiantes obtuvieron un diploma de escuela secundaria y un grado asociado en sólo cuatro años. Tenemos un maestro nacional del año, un becario Fulbright y el tercer mejor programa de desayuno en el país. Estos son sólo algunos de los logros de Newburgh que fueron reconocidos a nivel local y nacional.

La próxima semana, miles de estudiantes llegarán para el primer día de clases y pueden notar algunos cambios. Estamos lanzando un nuevo programa Early College High School, donde los estudiantes obtendrán hasta 26 créditos universitarios para el final de su último año. Eso equivale a un año de matrícula universitaria sin costo para ellos. . . o ustedes. Se implementará un nuevo currículo de matemáticas en todas las escuelas primarias. Este año, hemos invertido más recursos en nuestra convergencia digital, lo que permite que todos los estudiantes de tercero a décimo grado reciban su propia computadora portátil. Cada maestro en el distrito también recibió una computadora portátil. Esto se suma a las pizarras interactivas instaladas el año pasado en el 95% de nuestras aulas.

Además, después de un año de planificación y capacitación, Newburgh será un distrito de Google. El personal y los estudiantes tendrán acceso completo a las herramientas de GSuite for Education. Los nuevos contenidos y recursos digitales apoyarán a los docentes en sus esfuerzos por hacer que el aprendizaje sea más interactivo, dinámico y personalizado.

Más notablemente, hemos mantenido nuestro enfoque en asegurar ambientes escolares seguros. Durante el verano, contratamos a un Director de Seguridad y Vigilancia y monitores de seguridad adicionales. Hemos instalado 30 cámaras más. Habrá 1,000 cámaras más instaladas una vez que el estado de Nueva York apruebe la asignación de Smartbond. La nueva posición así como las medidas de seguridad adicionales enfatizan la importancia que le damos a la seguridad de los estudiantes y el personal. 

Nuestro portal en línea para informar cualquier preocupación relacionada con DASA (Dignidad para Todos los Estudiantes) fue lanzado la primavera pasada. Estamos orgullosos de poder ofrecer a nuestros alumnos y sus familias una forma de informar sus inquietudes anónimamente, aliviando los temores asociados con la denuncia de actos de intimidación. Lo exhortamos a usted y a su(s) hijo(s) a usar esta herramienta según sea necesario, para que podamos trabajar para abordar las inquietudes de DASA.

Por último, cada escuela tiene sus propias tradiciones y características únicas que las hacen especiales. Sin embargo, colectivamente representamos un distrito. El lema de este año es "Somos Uno". Nuestros esfuerzos y resultados reflejan una comunidad y un sistema escolar más unidos. Los datos cuentan una nueva historia sobre nuestro distrito. Continuemos colaborando para garantizar que nuestros alumnos tengan acceso a la mejor educación posible. Juntos, podemos inspirar a nuestros estudiantes a convertirse en líderes más allá del “Academy Field”.

Esperamos un año lleno de éxitos y emoción para todos nuestros alumnos y sus familias. En la unidad y mediante el trabajo de todos, lograremos la excelencia inclusiva.
